Our next Weekend School takes place at Dillington House, Illmister, Somerset TA19 9DT on Friday 4th October – Sunday 6th October, 2019 and there will be both a dancers and a musicians course.  Booking will open in January 2019

Our venue, Dillington House, was founded in 1949 as Somerset’s residential centre for adult education and offers a unique creative learning environment for personal and professional development.

Over recent years Dillington has been substantially refurbished to provide very high quality comfortable accommodation across three separate buildings. The accommodation is in en-suite bedrooms from the grand to the quaintly snug, from the traditional to the stylishly modern.

Our dancers course is an annual event and is suitable for those who already have a good working knowledge of common steps and formations in Scottish Country Dancing, and the weekend will give you an opportunity to improve your technique, learn new dances and enjoy all social aspects of Scottish Country Dancing  .

Our musicians course is a bi annual event and is for musicians interested in playing for Scottish Country Dancing within the concept of the dance band, and is principally aimed at melodic instruments, piano and double bass. Participants do not need to have had previous experience of playing in a band.

The sessions will provide a practical grounding in all aspects of band musicianship and playing for dancing, drawn from Ian’s considerable experience playing in Scottish Dance bands over 40 years and will cover:

  • The characteristics of the Reel, Jig and Strathspey
  • The instrumental techniques that are uniquely Scottish
  • Phrasing, sequencing and repertoire
  • The body language associated with drive and lift

There will be an opportunity on the Sunday morning to explore tempos and genres that are not usually encountered on the Scottish country dance floor including slow airs, waltzes, two-steps, and the scope that these give bands and musicians to explore harmony and rhythm through arrangement.

Dillington-StageAccommodation: Dillington House offers a range of accommodation in the Main House, the Mews and the new Hyde buildings.

There are double and twin en suite bedrooms as well as a small number single en suite bedrooms

Bookings: Participants book directly with Dillington on 01460 258613; booking will open early in January 2017. There is a £50 deposit required on booking.

The brochure and application form (bookings handled by Dillington), will be available via the Dillington website: http://www.dillington.co.uk
